With no wide releases this past weekend, it was easy for Disney’s Moan to take a second number one box office with $28.3. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them holds second with $18.1 and the last three were neck in neck behind each other with Arrival pulling $7.3, Allied getting $7 and Doctor Strange earning $6.7. I assume that Moana will retain the number one spot at the end of this weekend too.
Three new releases this weekend, with two of them in wide release:
Office Christmas Party – Based on a Saturday Nigh Live sketch of the same name, this is a massive cast of hilarious players including T.J. Miller, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston and Kate McKinnon to name a few. In the film, Miller plays a slacker employee who organizes a massive party to woo a potential client. Not an Oscar-worthy film, obviously, but sure to get the laughs flowing.
Miss Sloane – Jessica Chastain kicks ass and erases The Huntsman from your mind with this film about a ruthless lobbyist who turns on her former employers to push through a gun control bill. A really great lead performance in a film that is both relevant and very intriguing.
Things To Come – My favorite actress this year, Isabelle Huppert, stars in the first of two great French films, the second to be released next week. In this one she plays a school teacher who’s life is shaken up by a student body on strike, a husband who leaves her and a clingy, ailing mother. Really solid drama.
At The Rio Theatre: Everyone’s favorite ankle smasher, Annie Wilkes, graces the screen at the Rio this Friday for the midnight screening as Misery hits the screen at 11:55 pm. The thriller that earned Kathy Bates an Academy Award is perfectly suited for a snowy Vancouver to go check out and never take your freedom for granted again!
